Freie Music
Als Freie Musik wird Musik bezeichnet, durch deren Lizenz anderen Nutzern die Möglichkeit geboten wird diese Musik in einem größeren Maße zu verändern, verbreiten und zu nutzen als dies mit nicht freier Musik möglich ist. Es gibt keine einzig gültige Definition des Begriffes.
Free Music
Free music can be considered as music whose creator grants (by using a certain licence) to other people more than the right to consume her or his music. These rights may include the right to copy, modify and (re-)distribute musical works. Which of these rights on a musical work is granted to others gets settled in the licence the certain work is under.
Examples
One of the most popular licences for free content - the Creative Commons - actually provides a set of several licences that differ in the grade of freedom they grant to people. So can the author of a song decide to put his work under the Creative Commons Licence Attribution Share Alike, which means that others can do with this song what they want as long as the attribute it to the author and as long as they share the song (or the product the song has become a part of - e.g. a video clip) under the same conditions. Another musician might use the Creative Commons Licence NonCommercial, by which he forbids any commercial use of his song.
So different licences make it that there are different grades of freedom in free music. The "freest" music would be songs that are in the public domain.
