Registered Commons
Registered Commons
Austrian co-op initiative that "provides [for authors and re-mixers] a permanent link to the work, its license and a digital timestamp." [3] All kinds of digital works can be certified, e.g. Photography, poetry, a series of blog entries, MP3's or an open source software project. Allows anybody to have secure evidence about the author's permission for re-using it.
How it works
In order to register their work, authors need to sign-up. After uploading a release of their work, a hash code is generated a secure timestamp from A-cert is requested. Authors can generate themselves or order a printed and signed certificate, which they may file with their contracts. The timestamp is stored for 35 years by A-cert. Registered Commons stores the hash code for at least 7 years. The work of authors is being stored by fair-use principles. Registered Commons does not guarantee its availablity, depending on used disk and backup space.
Organisation
Behind the service is a public-private partnership. The public partner, the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, provides infrastructure. Private partners are organised in a co-op. Registered users of the service may also become RegisteredCommons shareholders. The co-op members keep control over the service through their vote in the general assembly. [4]
